This collection primarily consists of original material relating to Burt J. Thompson, and his father Jasper Thompson. Also included are various materials relating to Clara King Thompson, James Knox Polk Thompson and John Foster Thompson (Jasper's borhters), Bruce S. Thompson (Burt's son), Ethel Satterlee Thompson (Burt's wife), Dwight Satterlee (Ethel's father), as well as photocopies of papers and a diary of Jasper's mother, Martha Spaulding Thompson. Along with the family papers the collection also includes records of the Forest City Athenium Club, the Iowa Northern Land Company (est. 1901 by Jasper), the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Rock Rapids Methodist Episcopal Church (1874, 1882-1884), and several volumes of account books from the Thompson and Jacobs dry goods business. The papers in the collection include correspondence, speeches, biographical materials, business records, scrapbooks, personal financial records, land and real estate records, numerous photographs (portraits, travel photographs and various miscellaneous subjects), music books and sheet music, posters, school papers, newsclippings, ephemera (invitations, cards, programs, etc), maps and Civil War materials from Dwight Satterlee.
